“Hi, my name is Zelia Castello from Trinidad and Tobago. I came to India in October of 2022 for a bone marrow transplant,” Zelia begins. Faced with limited treatment options in her home country, she sought help from Lyfboat, where she connected with Dr. Surbhi Suden, affectionately referred to as her “India mummy.”
“Dr. Surbhi brought me to Dr. Rahul Bhargava of Fortis Memorial Hospital,” Zelia recounts. “At Fortis, I received the best care for my cancer treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I was at stage three, and there was nothing that could have been done for me in Trinidad. Therefore, I came here for the transplant.”
Intensive Treatment and Care
Upon her arrival, Zelia underwent two cycles of chemotherapy, which successfully sent her into remission. “Three weeks after, I was admitted for a bone marrow transplant,” she explains. “The bone marrow transplant was very intensive, but I managed to survive.”
Zelia’s experience highlights the challenges and triumphs of undergoing a bone marrow transplant. “A lot of persons out there who undergo bone marrow transplants do not make it, while some do. I’m very fortunate and very lucky to have been under the care of Dr. Rahul Bhargava and his team.”
